Kids R First, all-volunteer 501 c3 organization, is dedicated to education and to help give kids (grades K-12) from families with limited financial means the same opportunities as their peers, by receiving their school supplies and mini-scholarships funded at the high school level for those college or career bound.

All of these students qualify for Free or Reduced Priced Meals at their school. 2015: 25,000 kids (grades K-12) will receive their supplies at 90 schools in Fairfax and Loudoun County Public Schools.

How did Kids R First begin and WHY?

In 1995, a pilot program was set up, by a retired Fairfax County teacher Susan Ungerer, through volunteer work with an organization, Herndon-Reston FISH. In the months of August and September high volumes of families requesting special financial assistance did not have enough to pay for food rent and/or utilities as they were trying to purchase some of their children’s school supplies. Susan’s prediction, if families have help with their children’s school supplies, less assistance will be needed. With a combined fund of $1500 from FISH and The Closet in Herndon, she purchased a few supplies which gave 450 children a better start at (4) schools. It was so well received that the following year, 1,200 kids at (8) schools were helped and the third year, 2,000 kids at (12) schools. Calls for financial assistance dropped significantly. The need spoke for itself.

Therefore, Kids R First was founded in 1998 by Susan Ungerer with the help of other retired teachers and volunteers in the community. These committed teachers, like many today, used their own money to aid needy students. In 2000, a second program evolved at (3) high schools, College and Career Bound Program (CCBP) with a fund to assist students in high school with the many additional costs that were prohibitive and excluded them from participating.
